Last week we held our first Built to Last evening here at Wild. Twenty-something people came in on a Tuesday night, sat around the clinic, and gave us an hour of their time. This is what we talked about.
Most people think about ageing as something that arrives. One day your back is a problem, your energy is half what it was, your recovery takes longer. It feels sudden. Like weather.
It isn't.
Ageing is a rate, not an event. The body doesn't deteriorate overnight. It has been quietly doing so for years, absorbing load, compensating, adapting, until the point where it can no longer hide what has been building. What feels like a sudden problem is almost always an accumulation that finally reached its limit.
That reframe matters, because it changes the question. The question isn't "how do I fix this." It's "what has been compounding, and for how long."
The most important thing I said on the night.
Building physical capacity takes time and deliberate effort. Losing it is faster. And the older you get, the faster the loss accelerates.
Muscle mass peaks in your mid-30s. Without load-bearing movement, you lose between 3 and 8 percent per decade from there. That figure doesn't stay constant either. The losses compound. A 52-year-old who stops training loses capacity faster than they could have built it at 32.
The body is efficient. It deprioritises what it isn't being asked to maintain.
Sarcopenia, the clinical term for age-related muscle loss, is one of the strongest predictors of falls, fractures, and lost independence in later life. Not heart disease. Not cancer. Muscle loss. The research on this is not ambiguous, and the window where it's most reversible is your 30s, 40s, and early 50s.
Most people in the room were sitting in that window.
There's a difference between being fit and having structural capacity. You can run 5km and have a spine that can't handle six hours at a desk. You can train three times a week and still have muscle groups that haven't fired properly in years, because the pattern underneath has been compensating for long enough that the compensation became the baseline.
The body doesn't break because you did something wrong. It breaks because the structure underneath was quietly loaded past what it could absorb, and then one ordinary movement asked for just a little more than it had left.
That's not a muscle tear. That's a structural story that's been running for years.
The spine is not just a structural column. It's the central housing for your nervous system. When the spine is under sustained load, when posture shifts, when movement patterns are restricted, the nervous system stops getting the input it depends on to coordinate the body properly.
The weight-bearing proprioceptive system, the signals your muscles and joints send upward when you move and bear load, is one of the primary drivers of cortical activation and brain health. This isn't a metaphor. It's a mechanism. Move less, load the system less, and the brain gets less of the stimulation it needs to function well.
The research on sedentary lifestyle and cognitive decline points to the same relationship. The ageing muscular system and the ageing brain track together. Dementia and brain atrophy are not purely genetic inevitabilities. They are, to a meaningful degree, a use-it-or-lose-it story.
Which means strength isn't just about your back. It's about your brain, your independence, and your clarity at 70.
The other side of that ledger is what the second half of the evening covered. Six things that build and protect structural capacity across a lifetime.
Load-bearing movement. Not fitness. Axial loading. Walking with resistance, carrying, resistance training. The stimulus the body needs to maintain muscle and bone.
Spinal maintenance. Not crisis management. Regular structural assessment while function is still good, before accumulation reaches the threshold the body can no longer absorb silently.
Sleep as structural recovery. The period when tissue rebuilds, growth hormone is released, and the nervous system consolidates the day's movement patterns. Disrupted sleep is structural debt.
Movement breaks. Two to three minutes every forty-five to sixty minutes. Not intensity. Interruption of sustained load.
Weight-bearing proprioception. The signals your muscles and joints send upward when you bear load. One of the primary inputs the brain depends on to maintain function across a lifetime.
Starting now. The window where it costs the least and returns the most is open. Every year it is deferred, the rebuild gets harder.
